PayPal and put together a consumer shopping behavior research to uncover emerging trends in the online holiday shopping landscape.

The Holiday Shopping Retrospective Report: Merchant Insights For 2021 And Beyond, done in collaboration with, examines consumers’ shopping practices and preferences during the 2020 holiday season and what these mean for merchants now and for holiday seasons to come. The report is based on a census-balanced survey of 2,070 U.S. consumers.


Inside the February report:

-83 percent: Share of consumers who did some or all of their holiday shopping online

-40 percent: Share of consumers overall who used digital wallets to purchase gifts

-75 percent: Portion of consumers who plan to maintain some or all of their digital shopping habits beyond the pandemic
