About Main Street

eBay Inc.'s global Government Relations (GR) team represents the interests of all eBay Inc. customers, including PayPal merchants, before governments around the world.

To unite and activate our user communities, we created Main Street – a grassroots action network that keeps you informed and makes it easy to voice your opinion on public policy matters and government regulations that affect online commerce.

Main Street members can engage on important commerce issues by sending letters, signing online petitions, and meeting with state and federal policymakers. And through our social media forums, Main Street members have the ability to discuss these issues and share information with the larger Main Street community.

Below are examples of just two of the issues affecting Main Street members today:

Internet Sales Tax

Currently, the U.S. Congress is considering proposals that would expand sales tax collection for purchases made over the internet. eBay Inc. opposes any attempt to impose new Internet sales tax collection burdens on small Internet-enabled businesses. Under the proposals pending in Congress, small online businesses would be required to essentially become tax collectors for 9,600 jurisdictions nationwide. Some supporters of the legislation argue that online stores have an unfair price advantage. However, many of these supporters are billion dollar retailers that can negotiate lower costs of goods, receive shipping and tax breaks from state and local governments, and can afford to hire armies of accountants. Cybercrime

At eBay Inc., fighting cybercrime is a strategic business priority. We invest heavily in keeping our sites and services safe and secure for our customers. In the U.S., eBay Inc. has partnered with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in support of their online “Small Biz Cyber Planner 2.0” tool to help protect Internet-enabled small retailers from cyber threats. The Small Biz Cyber Planner 2.0 tool helps small businesses create cybersecurity plans that best fit their needs and business models, and ensure their safety and competitiveness.
