Accept donations quickly: Adding a Donate button to your site in minutes

Apr 07 2020 | PayPal Editorial Staff

If you need a quick way to accept donations on your website, we’ll walk through the process from start to finish.
At this point, you should’ve already opened a PayPal Business account. If you need help at any point, please call us at 844-720-4039.

Adding a Donate button to your website
If you already have a website, you can quickly add a button to accept donations or contributions. You only pay a low transaction fee when donors contribute to your organization. View fees.

If you’re registered as a 501(c)(3) public charity or similar organization, you may be eligible to confirm your PayPal Business account as a charity. Charity accounts benefit from paying reduced PayPal fees, including on payments made via the Donation button. 1

NOTE: If your website is hosted by an ecommerce platform – like BigCommerce, Magento, Shopify, or others – you may be able to add a new Donate button from your site’s administration console and skip the steps below.

Here’s what you’ll need to complete the steps below:
  • Your PayPal Business account username and password
  • Access to your website’s HTML code

Step-by-step instructions (total time: ~10 minutes per button)
  1. Log into your PayPal Business account.
  2. Click Tools at the top of the page, and then click PayPal buttons.
  3. Select the Donate button.
  4. Enter the item name and price. You can also customize the button with additional features. Click Create Button.
  5. Click Select Code to select the button code.
  6. Copy and paste the button code into your own web page code where you want the button to appear. Repeat the above process for every page where you want to add a button.
  7. This new button will appear on the "My Saved Buttons" page if you’d like to edit it at any point.

That’s it! You can now accept donations on your website.

As a next step, you can confirm your PayPal Business account as a charity, and then enroll in PayPal Giving Fund. Charities enrolled in the PayPal Giving Fund can receive donations through PayPal fundraising or donation programs run by our partners.

Frequently asked questions.

PayPal and Facebook make it easy for people to support your eligible business with donations. You’ll get the benefits of secure and fast payments by PayPal, along with the power of Facebook to generate awareness. You can include an optional gift voucher as a token of your appreciation, too.

How do I get started?
First, set up your personalized donation link which will be hosted by PayPal, so you don’t need a website or do any coding. You can share your unique link by email, text, social media, chat, and more.

How does the optional gift voucher work?
You can include a gift voucher for a discount on a future purchase, a complimentary product or a gift with purchase. Your gift voucher will be described in your donation link and donors can redeem it when they next make a purchase. If you choose to include a gift voucher, your donation link will be eligible for Facebook programs to support local businesses.

How are gift vouchers redeemed?
You can decide how redemption will work best for your business. For example, they could show their donation receipt or reference the PayPal transaction ID with their next order. When you set up your gift voucher, you’ll include instructions for how donors can redeem their gift voucher.

How do I include my donation link in Facebook programs to support local businesses?
If you include the optional gift voucher in your donation link, we’ll automatically submit it to Facebook. Allow 48 hours for the donation link to be available in Facebook. The inclusion and presentation of the gift voucher is subject to Facebook policies.

What information do you share with Facebook?
We share your business name, location, and logo with Facebook.

In the rare case when a donation cannot be granted according to a donor's recommendation, we will reassign the donation to another charitable organization.

While we take multiple steps to attempt to grant the donated funds according to the donor's identified preference, PayPal Giving Fund is the receiving charity of record and retains exclusive control over all donations. The listing of a charity in the directories of PayPal Giving Fund or its partners is not a guarantee that the charity will ultimately receive funds from PayPal Giving Fund.

Upon receiving a donation, PayPal Giving Fund will attempt to make a grant to the charity the donor intended to benefit. Pending distribution of grants, PayPal Giving Fund holds all donations in a secure, non-interest-bearing bank account.

In the event we are unable to distribute the funds successfully (e.g., the charity does not enroll with PayPal Giving Fund and fails to cash the check(s) we send), or if the charity no longer complies with our Nonprofit Certification Policy, we reserve the right to reassign the donation to another charitable organization. Where possible, PayPal Giving Fund will contact the original donor to ask for a new charity recommendation to benefit from their donation.

We ensure all charities have met the eligibility requirements in our Nonprofit Certification Policy before including them in our programs. You can learn more about how we grant funds to enrolled and unenrolled charities by reviewing our Donation Delivery Policy.

If you would like to contact us and don’t have a PayPal account, please click here and fill out the form so we can help you resolve your PayPal Giving Fund issues.
Click the Track your donation link in your donation receipt email to see whether your donation has been granted to the charity you intended to benefit. You can also enter the Transaction ID from your donation receipt into our donation tracker

Typically, it takes 15-45 days for a donation to be granted to a charity enrolled with PayPal Giving Fund. It can take 90 days or longer to grant a donation to charities in our database that haven’t yet enrolled with PayPal Giving Fund.

If it has been longer than 45 days since you donated to an enrolled charity, or longer than 90 days since you donated to an unenrolled charity, please contact our customer service team.
