Understanding payment holds and how to avoid them

We know payment holds can be inconvenient. But we use them to help ensure secure transactions between PayPal merchants and customers.

How can I get my funds as quickly as possible?

To release your payment hold, take these actions based on the items sold.

What did you sell?

If you sold a physical product:

  • Add the tracking number provided by one of the supported carriers * on the transaction activity page, or print shipping labels with us so we can track your UPS or USPS shipment.
  • Your funds will be released 1 day after delivery is confirmed.

If you sold a service or digital product:

  • Update the status of your service or digital product sale on the transaction activity page (eg., delivered or ending delivered).
  • Your funds could be released 7 days after your status is updated, depending on your sales activity. otherwise, they'll be released in up on to 21 days after the hold was placed.
