Can I cancel a PayPal payment?

You can usually cancel a PayPal payment that’s in a pending or unclaimed status and has the “Cancel” link next to it. These payments will have a status of “Unclaimed” and will show in the “Pending” section of your PayPal account. If the payment is completed, you won’t be able to cancel it. You’ll need to contact the recipient/seller and request a refund.

If the payment you sent is pending for 30 days, it will be canceled automatically and refunded to the funding source you used to send the payment. If you cancel a payment you just sent from your bank, and the payment has not cleared your bank yet, please allow 3-4 business days for the money to appear in your bank account.

From your PayPal app, here's how to cancel a pending payment:

  1. Tap See Activity.
  2. Select the payment you want to cancel.
  3. Tap Cancel Payment.

From your computer, here's how:
  1. On the Activity page, locate the pending payment.
  2. Click Cancel.
  3. On the next page click Cancel Payment.

Should I cancel my payment, file a dispute, or request a refund?
If you purchased something and haven't received it, it's not as described, or you feel the payment is unauthorized, you can file a case in our Resolution Center to start the process of getting your money back.

If you paid a merchant (company) but changed your mind on a purchase and want your money back, you’ll need to contact the seller and ask them to cancel your purchase. If the payment is completed, please ask about their return policy, or request a refund. Please review the steps below on finding your merchant's contact information.
Contacting your seller

To find the seller's contact information:
  1. Click Activity at the top of the page.
  2. Click the transaction in your list of recent transactions.
  3. On the "Transaction Details" page, you’ll see the seller’s name, email, and, if available, the seller’s customer service phone number.

Can I cancel a PayPal order or authorization?
If you need to cancel a PayPal order or authorization on your account, please contact the merchant directly. An order or authorization is an agreement between you and the merchant to purchase an item for a set amount, and PayPal doesn't have the ability to cancel that agreement.

Orders and authorizations typically expire in 30 days.

Authorizations can also be placed for a future purchase, for example a hotel stay or reservation. This type of authorization would not be processed until you arrive.
