What is PayPal Smart Route and how does it work?
PayPal Smart Route is a PayPal mobile app feature that lets you automatically split your incoming Direct Deposit between your PayPal Balance account and PayPal Savings according to a percentage you specify on a recurring basis. It also enables easy setup of Low Balance automatic reloads from PayPal Savings to PayPal balance so users can earn interest on the funds held in PayPal Savings and have sufficient funds in their PayPal balance for spending.
When you receive a Direct Deposit (like your paycheck), you can set what percent goes into your PayPal balance (for spending) and how much goes into PayPal Savings (for earning interest). Your Direct Deposit will first go to your PayPal balance, and a portion of it will immediately be transferred to PayPal Savings based on the percentage distribution you selected.
The Direct Deposit amount needs to be $50 or higher for the split percent to be applied between PayPal balance and PayPal Savings. If the Direct Deposit amount is less than $50, the split will not be applied, and the full Direct Deposit amount will be added to PayPal balance only.
How do I set up PayPal Smart Route?
- Go to your PayPal app, click on PayPal balance tile on the home page and navigate to PayPal Smart Route setup in the Balance page.

Can I cancel or change my PayPal Smart Route settings later?
Yes, you can cancel PayPal Smart Route or update your split ratios anytime by navigating to the PayPal Balance account page on the mobile app and clicking on the manage button next to PayPal Smart Route. You can cancel PayPal Smart Route by clicking the "Turn Off PayPal Smart Route" button. If you have Low Balance Auto Reload from Savings enabled, it will also be cancelled when you cancel Smart Route.
Are there any fees for using PayPal Smart Route?
There are no fees for using either Direct Deposit split or Low Balance Auto Reload from PayPal Savings.
Can I edit the Low Balance Auto Reload amounts in PayPal Smart Route?
Low Balance Auto Reload amounts cannot be edited from the PayPal Smart Route page but can be modified from the Auto Reload manage page in PayPal Balance tab in the app.
