How do I accept Tap to Pay payments with PayPal?

Tap to Pay enables you to accept in-person contactless payments on your mobile device with the PayPal app. There’s no additional hardware needed.

You’ll need to create a Business PayPal account to accept payments with Tap to Pay.

With Tap to Pay, you can accept all types of contactless debit and credit payments, including VISA, MasterCard, Amex, and Discover.

Which devices are compatible?  

Tap to Pay on iPhone requires iPhone XS or later, running the latest version of iOS. Tap to Pay also works on devices with Android 8.1 and higher, NFC capabilities, and Google Play services.

How much are the fees?  

PayPal’s Tap to Pay fee is the same as a regular PayPal transaction fee.

Get started

Here’s how to get started with Tap to Pay on your device with the PayPal app:

iPhone

1. Tap the Menu tab at the bottom of the app home screen.
2. Select Tap to Pay on iPhone under Get Paid.
3. Tap Get Started and follow the on-screen instructions to accept payment.

Android

1. Select Menu at the bottom of the app home screen.
2. Select Tap to Pay under Get Paid.
3. Tap Get Started and follow the on-screen instructions to accept payment.

Start accepting payments

Here’s how to accept contactless payments with Tap to Pay on iPhone:

1. Open the PayPal app on your iPhone and enter the purchase amount.
2. Present your iPhone to the customer.
3. Your customer holds their card horizontally or their device at the top of your iPhone, over the contactless symbol for a few seconds.
4. When you see the Done checkmark, the card read is complete and the transaction is being processed.

Here’s how to accept contactless payments with Tap to Pay on Android:

1. Open the PayPal app and enter the purchase amount.
2. Present your Android device to the customer.
3. Your customer holds their card horizontally or their device at the top of your Android device, over the contactless symbol for a few seconds.
4. When you see the Done checkmark, the card read is complete and the transaction is being processed.

Where does the money go when I collect payment?  

After accepting a Tap to Pay payment, the money is paid to your PayPal balance directly.  

Can I accept a tip through Tap to Pay?  

Currently tipping isn't supported through Tap to Pay; however, it's something we're working on.

How do I refund a Tap to Pay transaction?  

Here’s how to refund a Tap to Pay payment in the PayPal app:

1. Tap Wallet.
2. Tap Activity.
3. Tap the transaction and select Refund.
