Matt Bolger first picked up golf at university, while studying at fashion school. What started as a casual hobby quickly turned into something more serious. “I loved the game, hated the wardrobe”, he said.
In 2020, Matt opened the doors to Angus and Grace Go Golfing, a boutique store on Paddington’s William Street offering a golf wear brand with utility and style. Angus and Grace Go Golfing quickly gained traction among style-conscious golfers looking for something they could wear both on and off the course.
Behind the scenes, the business was growing rapidly on the wholesale side – creating custom merchandise for some of the world’s most iconic golf clubs. “We’ve grown on the wholesale side, creating merch for famous golf clubs across the globe – Mexico, the States, New Zealand”, Matt said.
To keep up with the demand – both locally and overseas – Matt needed payment solutions that could support that growth. “PayPal made that leap possible. I’m not exactly tech-minded, so making my everyday easier is something I look for”.
Whether sending invoices to clients or taking payments online, PayPal has helped streamline the backend: “I’m sending international invoices out daily, knowing customers have a simple link to pay in their own currency is so easy for them and for me! Game-changer”.
The feedback loop from customers helped shape the product design – and the checkout experience too. “I’ve learnt that you need to be adaptable to change. If someone doesn’t like your product, it’s ok – even including how they want to pay for it”, says Matt.
“When customers wanted PayPal, it was so easy to slot into our website and invoicing solutions”.
Now, whether it’s eCommerce, wholesale, or even non-golf fashion buyers, PayPal is part of the brand’s entire sales ecosystem. Additionally, adding features like PayPal Pay in 41 has also boosted sales, particularly among younger buyers shopping the brand’s sub-label, Golf Daddy.
For Matt, trust and usability are as important online as they are in store. “No matter who is shopping with us, seeing PayPal on our site gives them that layer of trust. PayPal is helping us build a business like our design ethos: user-first, versatile, and long lasting”.
