How do we do it?

If we need to confirm your identity, we’ll try to confirm your full name, residential address and date of birth electronically. If we can’t, we’ll ask you to submit two documents.

Proof of name and date of birth

We’ll need one of:

  • A current Australian or foreign driver’s licence or permit (both sides)*
  • An Australian passport
  • A current foreign/United Nations-issued passport
  • A current Australian proof of age card
  • A current national identity card
  • An Australian birth certificate
  • An Australian citizenship certificate
  • A citizenship certificate issued by a foreign government (if not in English, accompanied by an English translation prepared by an accredited translator)

The document must show your full name and date of birth, and these must match the information you provided when opening your PayPal account.

Proof of residential address

And one of:

  • A current Australian or foreign driver’s licence or permit (both sides)*
  • A utility bill, for example electricity, gas, water or landline phone (issued within the past 3 months)
  • An Australian bank statement (issued within the past 3 months)
  • A notice of council rates (issued within the past 3 months)
  • A notice of tax assessment by the Australian Taxation Office (issued within the past 12 months)
  • A Centrelink statement recording a financial benefit paid to you (issued within the past 12 months)

The document must show your full name and residential address and these must match the information entered in your PayPal account.

Why is there a limitation on my account?

If we need to confirm your identity, we may limit your access to certain PayPal services until we receive and confirm your documents. This may include limiting your ability to send, withdraw or receive funds.

How do I know the request for my identification documents is really from PayPal?

If you receive an email requesting documents, log in to your PayPal account. You’ll see an alert requesting you to provide the documents.

We need to confirm your identity to ensure you’re the rightful account owner. We do this to keep our community of buyers and sellers safer, and to comply with Australian Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing laws.
