Why was my payment sent as an eCheque and why is it pending?

It usually takes up to 7 working days for an eCheque to clear, but sometimes it may take longer.

If you make a PayPal payment funded by your bank account, without a credit/debit card linked to your PayPal account, it’ll be sent as an eCheque. If you have a bank account and a credit/debit card linked to your PayPal account, your payment should complete instantly.

However, there are cases where your payment could be sent as an eCheque even if you’ve linked both a bank account and a credit/debit card to your PayPal account because our internal security system has intervened.

We put security measures in place to review transactions before they’re sent out to ensure that all parties involved are protected.

An eCheque is an electronic transfer from your bank account to another person's PayPal account. It's like writing a cheque, but you send it electronically.

If there’s insufficient money in your bank account or your bank declines the transaction when we attempt to complete the eCheque payment, we’ll try again within 3 working days. If the payment is declined a second time, we’ll cancel it. Remember, your bank may charge a fee for declined payments.

You won't be able to send an eCheque if an instant transfer is possible.
