Why was my customer's credit card declined?

Issue
PayPal didn't accept your customer's credit card. An error message states, "The transaction could not be completed. Please try again" or "Credit card not accepted."

Causes
PayPal typically declines a credit card when:

  • Not enough credit or funds are available on the card.
  • The card issuer wants to verify that the transaction is legitimate, and the card owner needs to approve the online transaction.

Solutions
If the customer already has the credit card on their PayPal account, you can invoice them or use a PayPal account payment flow to accept payment. You can also ask the customer to use a different credit card or provide an additional way to pay.

If the issuing bank needs to verify the transaction, the customer must contact the bank for approval.
