How do I activate my card?

Go to Log into your account and select Activate PayPal Business Debit Mastercard. You'll need to provide your date of birth and Social Security Number as required by the USA PATRIOT Act.2

How do I activate my cash back benefit?

The 1% cash back benefit can be activated during the card activation process or afterward by clicking here.

Is there any cost to activate my cash back benefit?

No. If you haven't done so previously, just select the “Activate cash back” link that will be highlighted during the card activation process. As soon as you do, you'll begin earning unlimited 1% cash back on eligible purchases that will be automatically deposited to your PayPal balance once each month.t

What types of purchases qualify to earn cash back?

Eligible purchases include, but are not limited to, purchases processed as a credit transaction. PIN-based transactions do not qualify. Please see Cardholder Agreement for complete cash back details.

Are there any fees for using the debit card?

Fees that may apply include: $1.50 ATM Domestic & International Withdrawal, $3.00 Over the Counter Withdrawal and a 1% Foreign Transaction Fee. For complete details, please see the Cardholder Agreement. View Cardholder Agreement

Can I request an additional card for use on my account?

Yes. Simply call toll-free (866) 888-6080 (US) or (402) 935-2017 (international). There's no charge to receive an additional card. You will be liable for all transactions made on your account by any authorized users, as if they were your own transactions.

Does the card protect me from fraudulent charges?

Does my PayPal account need a minimum balance?

No. You can use the card to spend your PayPal balance everywhere Mastercard is accepted.

How do I set up a backup funding source?

Log into your PayPal account and select PayPal Business Debit Mastercard. Next, select Backup: Edit and follow the instructions to Set up or change my backup payment method.

Lost/stolen & replacement cards

How do I report a lost or stolen card?

Log into you PayPal account and select the PayPal Business Debit Mastercard. Next, select the debit card you want to report lost or stolen (if you have a secondary debit card on your account) Select Report card lost or stolen and follow the instructions.

Why have you sent me this replacement card?

There are two possible reasons:

  • Your existing card has been scheduled to be deactivated in the near future since it lacks our latest cardholder security and convenience features; OR
  • You recently reported your existing card as lost, stolen or malfunctioning

Can I continue to use my existing card?

If you filed a lost or stolen report, your existing card was closed at that time, in order to minimalize unauthorized charges.

If you did not file a report, but have received the updated, chip card, you may use your existing card until the expiration date, or the deactivation date listed on the card carrier, whichever comes first.

In order to avoid any interruption in service, we do suggest to activate your new card right away and securely dispose of any existing card you may have. Please update any merchants or billing preferences with the new card information.

Will I continue to earn unlimited 1% cash back as before?

Yes. If you have activated your cash back benefit previously, it will continue as always. If you have not activated this valuable benefit previously, you will be invited to do so when you visit to activate your new card.

Using the Card

Does the mag-stripe on this chip card still work?

Yes, your card still has the traditional mag-stripe and can be used everywhere Mastercard is accepted.

How do I use the chip card?

Insert the chip card with the chip facing upwards into the card slot at the end of the terminal. If prompted, enter a PIN, or just sign if not prompted. The card is left in the slot until the transaction is complete. Once the transaction is complete, you will be prompted to remove the chip card.

Why do I have to leave my card in the terminal?

The merchant's terminal reads pertinent information from the chip and passes it securely to the financial network for authorization – typically this process takes just a few seconds.

How do I know if a merchant's terminal is chip enabled or not?

Most terminals will have instructions on them – or the cashier will prompt you. You will be prompted to either “Insert, Swipe or Tap your card” and it will be immediately recognized and the transaction will be processed. If you are prompted to insert your card, it is a chip enabled terminal. If you are prompted to swipe your card it is not chip enabled. If you are prompted to tap your card, it is an NFC (contactless) enabled terminal.

What if the merchant does not have a chip enabled terminal?

No problem. Your PayPal Business Debit Mastercard also has a magnetic stripe on the back, enabling you to use it at merchants who do not yet have a chip enabled payment terminal.

Can't I just swipe the card instead?

If the payment terminal is chip enabled, you will need to insert vs swipe, even if it also has a mag stripe reader. If you try to swipe your card instead, the terminal will detect the chip and automatically prompt you to insert the chip card into the terminal's card slot.

Can this card be used at Paypass / contactless payment readers?

Yes. Your PayPal Business Debit Mastercard will also work with terminals that accept contactless payments (sometimes known as NFC or Near Field Communications), including Paypass terminals. Simply tap your PayPal Business Debit Mastercard to initiate the payment, then follow the on-screen prompts.

Where can I use my chip card?

You can use your PayPal Business Debit Mastercard everywhere Mastercard is accepted.

Can I still use the card for other types of purchases such as mobile, online, telephone and mail order?

Yes. For phone or online transactions, nothing changes from what you do today. Simply provide your new PayPal Business Debit Mastercard account number – which is now on the back of the card – your current expiration date and your new 3 digit security code (also on the back of the card), if asked.

Can I use this chip card for internet/online purchases?

Yes. When making an online purchase, if a merchant doesn't accept PayPal, simply enter your card information on checkout

Are all merchants trained on how to accept chip cards?

If the terminal accepts chip cards, the merchants will be trained on how to process and accept this payment type. Mastercard requires all attended point-of-sale terminals in the U.S. to be equipped to accept EMV (chip transactions).

Does the chip card cost me anything extra?

No. PayPal is providing chip cards at no charge to provide you better service and increased security.

Does the chip card require a PIN?

  1. a. Yes. If you are receiving a PayPal Business Debit Mastercard for the first time you will be asked to establish a 4-digit PIN for security purposes.
  2. b. Yes. If you are receiving a 'replacement' card for your existing PayPal Business Debit Mastercard (now containing a chip), you will be asked to re-establish your PIN. You may use the same PIN as before or change the PIN upon activation.

Can't I just sign for it instead?

In certain situations, yes. However, the PIN is a more secure method of use and some establishments will require you enter your PIN.

What makes the chip card more secure?

Your new PayPal Business Debit Mastercard adds an additional layer of sophisticated fraud protection. Your new card has an embedded microchip that turns the information on your card into a unique code (or “token”) when used at a chip-enabled terminal. Since this code is very difficult to duplicate or copy, you have an extra layer of protection!

Why should I feel more secure with the PayPal Business Debit Mastercard?

Your new PayPal Business Debit Mastercard provides greater protection against fraud when you use your chip card to make purchases at merchants that use chip enabled (EMV) terminals to accept your payment. The chip cards encrypt personal data, making it much more difficult to copy the details on your card. In addition, the transaction data is passed to the financial network via secure tokens.

Should I be worried that my personal information may be vulnerable if my card gets lost or stolen?

The embedded microchip on your new PayPal Business Debit Mastercard makes information much more difficult to duplicate or copy, and provides enhanced fraud protection on your account when used at a chip enabled terminal. If your card is lost or stolen, and you have enabled the PIN, the user will be unable to complete any PIN based transactions. If your card is lost or stolen, you should still call 1-866-888-6080 and let us know so we can immediately disable the card and issue a new chip card to you.

Can I use my card to securely obtain cash from an ATM?

Yes. You can use your PayPal Business Debit Mastercard to get cash from your PayPal balance. Simply insert the card into the ATM – as you would with a magnetic-stripe card, and follow the on-screen prompts. The ATM will accept the card and will not damage the chip.

If the card gets wet, will it destroy the chip?

The chip on your PayPal Business Debit Mastercard is very sturdy. However, it is always best to protect your chip card as best as possible from the elements.

If I lose my card, can I get a replacement with the chip?

Yes. We can typically ship your PayPal Business Debit Mastercard within 4-5 business days. Please call 1-866-888-6080 and speak with one of our customer service representatives to report a lost card. They will be more than happy to assist you!

How do I destroy my old card that is being replaced?

After you activate your new PayPal Business Debit Mastercard, you should cut through the mag-stripe of the old card, and then dispose of the pieces securely.

Add money to your PayPal account

Receive money from friends/family

When someone sends money from their PayPal account to yours, the transferred funds will be available for use in your account immediately.

Link a bank account

Transfer money securely – typically within 3-4 business days- to your PayPal account any time and at no cost. PayPal will email you each time a transfer is complete:

  1. Click transfer money by your PayPal balance.
  2. Enter the amount you want to transfer and click Add.

At a participating point of sale using PayPal Cash Loads

Log in to PayPal Cash Loads and pick a participating retailer. PayPal will create a custom barcode to print out or present on your smartphone. Take your cash and barcode to the register at the participating retailer. A service fee of $3.95 for each transaction will apply. Your money will automatically be added to your PayPal account and you’ll receive an email confirmation from PayPal.

PayPal Swipe to Reload at a participating retailer

Take your card to any participating Green Dot retailer and let the cashier know you would like to load funds to your PayPal balance. Hand the cashier the cash (between $20 and $500) you want added to your PayPal account, then they will ask you to swipe your PayPal Business Debit Mastercard. Up to a $4.95 load fee for each transaction will apply. The loaded funds will be available in your balance within minutes.

If you’re unable to add money to your PayPal balance, it could be because:

  • There may be a limitation placed on your account. Find out possible reasons for this limitation.
  • You may need to first verify your identity. Find out the benefits of PayPal’s Customer Identification Program (CIP).
  • In some situations, Transfer money may not be available. If you have received an error message, this feature may not be available for you at this time. You can either try adding money with PayPal Cash (service fee indicated above may apply), or sending your money directly to the recipient using a bank account or a debit/credit card.
