How do I close the PayPal account of a deceased relative?

We’re very sorry to hear of your loss. Please note that we can only take instructions from the authorized executor or administrator of the deceased estate to close a PayPal account previously held by a deceased person. If you wish to close the account of a loved one, please contact the relevant executor or administrator.

If you are the executor or administrator of a deceased estate, please follow the guidance below so we can assist with your request.

To close or lock the PayPal account of the deceased person, please collect these documents and send them to europeanservices@paypal.com:

  • A cover sheet that states that the account holder is deceased and that the account’s executor wants to close the account.
  • The death certificate of the account holder.
  • Legal documentation or a copy of the will that identifies the executor of the estate.
  • A government-issued photo ID of the executor.
  • A letter that specifies what to do with any money that remains in the account.

We'll review the documents and inform you how to proceed to release the amount, in case it exists. Depending on our review, we'll disburse any funds that remain in the account by transferring the balance to the bank account linked to the PayPal account.

You can also upload the documents. Here's how to upload your JPG, PNG, or GIF files for review by PayPal:

  1. Go to www.paypal.co.il and log into the PayPal account of the deceased person.
  2. Paste this URL into your browser: https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/?cmd=_file-upload-or-fax-outside-resolution-centre&file_upload_for=account_management&continue.x&fli=true.
  3. Click Browse to find your document(s), give it a title, select what type it is, provide a description, and click Upload File.
  4. Follow the prompted steps to upload the files. When you're finished, click Send Files.

Tips:

  • Please note that not all 'pdf' attachments are readable in our system, we recommend that you send us your documents using a ‘jpg’ file format instead.
  • The file name should include no more than 3 numbers.
  • Your files appear in the ‘Attachments’ box. Here you can preview or delete anything you upload.
  • We don’t accept files that are sent as email attachments.

Please let us know immediately after you’ve sent us your documents, so we can continue processing your request - click Contact Us at the bottom of any PayPal page.
