How to Top Up

Besides using credit card as a funding source for your PayPal Account, you can also transfer funds from your local bank account to top up your PayPal Account by making a local interbank transfer, either at a bank branch or through your bank’s internet banking system. You can then pay for online purchases or make personal payments to friends or family securely.


Few things to note before topping up:

  • You must first add your own bank account to your PayPal Account.
  • Name on both your PayPal and bank accounts must match.
  • Only transfer from a local Hong Kong bank account will be accepted.
  • Funds must be in Hong Kong dollars only.
  • It normally takes 3-6 business days for funds to appear in your PayPal Account balance, depending on your bank and the transfer option.
  • Your bank may charge you a local interbank transfer fee, but there is no charge from PayPal.

How to top up your PayPal Account:

Step 1: Add your local Hong Kong bank account to your PayPal Account.

  • You must add your bank account to your PayPal Account prior to top up, and the name on both your PayPal and bank accounts must match, otherwise the top up transaction will fail and your bank may impose a penalty charge on you.
  • PayPal may ask you to confirm your bank account after you’ve added it. Although we encourage you to do so to ensure your bank account is properly added, you don’t need to complete that in order to top up.

Step 2: Top up your PayPal Account via bank branch or bank’s online banking.

After you have added the bank account to your PayPal Account, you can initiate the top up, either at a bank branch or through your bank’s online system.

What is PayPal Top Up?

In addition to adding credit card to your PayPal Account to funds your purchase, PayPal Top Up is a feature that allows you to transfer funds from your local bank account to your PayPal Account by making a local interbank transfer. You can then use the balance in your PayPal Account to pay for online purchases. It’s an additional way for you to pay securely or send money to your friends and family using PayPal.

How does it work?

It’s just like a local interbank transfer. You transfer funds from your bank account to PayPal’s bank account, and PayPal will release the fund to your PayPal Account (balance). However, for PayPal to know the money is coming from your own bank account, it’s important for you to add your bank account to your PayPal Account first.

Is there anything I need to do before topping up my PayPal Account?

Yes, in order to allow PayPal to reconcile your PayPal Account with your bank account, you must first add a bank account to your PayPal Account and the name on both accounts must march. Otherwise the top up transaction will fail and your bank may impose a penalty charge on you. Refer to Step 1 under the “Topping Up for the First Time” tab for details.

Why must my PayPal Account name match the name on my bank account?

For regulatory and security reason, the name on your bank account must match the name on your PayPal Account so that PayPal can identify you. Also, if the name doesn’t match, the transaction will fail and your bank may impose a penalty charge on you.

How long does it take for the funds to arrive in my PayPal Account?

If you have added a bank to your PayPal Account and follow the instruction correctly, it normally takes 3 - 6 business days for funds to appear in your PayPal Account balance, depending on your bank and the transfer option. -If you don’t see the funds in your PayPal Account after 6 business days, please have information of your own bank account ready (including Bank Name, Bank Code, Account Number, Date of Transaction, Transfer Amount) and Contact Us.

How much does it cost to top up my PayPal Account?

PayPal does not charge any fee for Top Up. However, your bank may charge you a local interbank transfer fee. Please refer to your bank’s fee schedule for details.

Is there a maximum Top Up amount?

Yes, the maximum Top Up amount is $80,000 HKD each time.

Can I top up my PayPal Account with foreign currency (non-HKD) from a local bank in Hong Kong?

No, PayPal Top Up only supports funds in Hong Kong Dollar.

Can I top up my PayPal Account with Hong Kong Dollar funds from a bank outside of Hong Kong?

No, PayPal Top Up only supports Hong Kong Dollar funds from a local bank in Hong Kong.

Can I top up my PayPal Account from an ATM machine?

Top Up from an ATM machine is currently not supported by PayPal. You need to either go to a bank branch or your bank’s online system to make a local interbank transfer to top up your PayPal Account.

What causes a Top Up to be rejected?

Possible reasons include:

  • The names on your PayPal Account and bank account don’t match.
  • You transfer funds from a financial institution not supported by PayPal Top Up, or your funds are not in Hong Kong Dollar.
  • You don’t add a bank account to your PayPal Account before topping up.
  • Request a local interbank transfer.
  • You may need to select a transfer option (if available). Processing time and fee may vary.
  • Fill out the local transfer request form with the following information in the section for beneficiary (the account to which funds are transferred):

Beneficiary Name: PayPal Pte. Ltd.

Beneficiary Bank Name: Bank of America, N.A.

Currency: HKD

Bank Code: 055

Beneficiary Account number: 757-81718071

  • Put the bank account you added to your PayPal Account as the funding account (must be a local Hong Kong bank account and in Hong Kong Dollars).
  • Normally funds will appear in your PayPal Account balance in 3 - 6 business days, depending on your bank and the transfer option.
  • If you don’t see the funds in your PayPal Account after 6 business days, please have information of your own bank account ready (including Bank Name, Bank Code, Account Number, Date of Transaction, Transfer Amount) and Contact Us.
  • Depending on your bank, you may need to pre-register the beneficiary (the account to which funds are transferred) before you can initiate an interbank transfer online.
  • Provide the following beneficiary information to your bank:

Beneficiary Name: PayPal Pte. Ltd.

Beneficiary Bank Name: Bank of America, N.A.

Currency: HKD

Bank Code: 055

Beneficiary Account number: 757-81718071

  • After you’ve registered the beneficiary (it may take a few days to process), log on to your online banking system and select local interbank transfer.
  • Select the above beneficiary bank account and select a transfer option (if available).
  • Follow your bank’s instruction carefully as processing time and fee may vary.
  • Normally funds will appear in your PayPal Account balance in 3 - 6 business days, depending on your bank and the transfer option.
  • If you don’t see the funds in your PayPal Account after 6 business days, please have information of your own bank account ready (including Bank Name, Bank Code, Account Number, Date of Transaction, Transfer Amount) and Contact Us.
