Accepted Payment Methods

Currencies

Regardless of the currency of your customer's bank account, they should be able to purchase from you. If the transaction is on a credit or debit card, it will be processed in USD and the customer's bank will convert the charge to the customer's base currency. Some customers may be charged a conversion fee by their banks.

If the transaction is on a PayPal account, you may be charged this conversion fee instead—read more below in the PayPal section on blocking foreign currencies.

Card types

Your account is configured to accept the following card types as long as the card does not require a PIN or password:

  • Visa
  • MasterCard
  • American Express
  • Discover
  • JCB
  • Diner's

Special note on American Express

If you process less than $1 million in annual volume on American Express, you can use Braintree's aggregated AmEx account. This is the easiest way to accept AmEx and is enabled on your account by default, but it's important to note that you will have less flexibility with your descriptors.

Alternatively, you can apply for your own account directly through AmEx. If you choose this option, your funding, descriptors, and chargebacks on AmEx transactions will be managed by AmEx and you'll need to contact them for support on these issues.

Alternative payment methods

In addition to the card types listed above, you can also accept PayPal transactions through your BigCommerce store. When you signed up with BigCommerce, a PayPal account was automatically created for you if you didn't have one already. Be sure that you've verified your email address with PayPal before completing the setup steps below.

Verify your PayPal account

In order to avoid withdrawal limits or the inability to process transactions, you will need to verify specific information, like your bank account.

If you navigate to your profile in the PayPal console, you should see prompts that will help you complete the verification. If you are having trouble, contact the PayPal Support team.

Enable Settlement Withdrawal

To keep funding as simple as possible, we recommend that you enable Settlement Withdrawal on your account by contacting PayPal. You can read more about withdrawing funds from PayPal here.

Block eCheck payments

An eCheck, or electronic check, is a payment sent directly from your customer's bank account. Braintree does not support these transactions at this time. If your PayPal account allows for eCheck payment attempts, the authorization may be successful, but the transaction will be automatically voided.

eCheck payments can be blocked before the authorization, which provides a better experience for your customers. To block eCheck payments, adjust your payment receiving preferences.

Extend refund time frame

By default, PayPal requires that refunds are issued within 60 days of the sale, but this can be adjusted by contacting the PayPal Support team.

Block foreign currencies

PayPal supports many currencies, which means that customers can usually purchase from you even if their PayPal account isn't in the same currency as your PayPal Business Account. When you accept these payments, you will be assessed a 2.5% conversion fee. If you'd like to avoid this fee, you can adjust your payment receiving preferences to block all payments in foreign currencies.
