How do I receive a tip using PayPal Zettle?

You can receive tips with the card reader or Terminal.

Activate the function within Settings in the app by tapping Payment settings and then Tipping

How do I start receiving tips?

Firstly, activate tipping by:

  1. Open the PayPal Zettle app.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Locate Payment settings.
  4. Tap Tipping.
  5. Enable tipping as an amount, or percentage of the total bill.

You can then receive tips during checkout by:

  1. Add the required products to an order, or charge a custom amount.
  2. Tap Charge and select card as the payment method.
  3. Your customer will now be asked if they'd like to tip.
  4. If they say yes, they'll be asked to enter an amount or percentage depending on your setup.

Can I include the tip when issuing a refund?

If you'd like to refund tips by default:

  1. Open the PayPal Zettle app.
  2. Tap Settings then Tipping.
  3. Toggle Refund tip on.

This will now mean that any tips are automatically included in your refunds.

If you'd like to have the option of refunding a tip on a per-transaction basis, this can be done by:

  1. Go to the main menu and tap Receipts.
  2. Choose the payment that you want to refund.
  3. Tap Refund.
  4. Select the products to be refunded
  5. Toggle the Refund tip on.

The tip will then be included in the refund of this transaction.

Good to know:

  • Customers can tip up to 100% of the sale amount. If they enter an amount higher than that, the card reader will show a warning message.
  • It’s important that you understand how to receive and declare tips according to local tax authority regulations.
  • Tips accepted with a Zettle card reader are presented on your PayPal Zettle sales reports and your receipts.
