Why was my customer's credit card declined?

PayPal didn't accept your customer's credit card. An error message states, "The transaction could not be completed. Please try again" or "Credit card not accepted."

PayPal typically declines a credit card when:
  • Not enough credit or funds are available on the card.
  • The card issuer wants to verify that the transaction is legitimate, and the card owner needs to approve the online transaction.

If the issuing bank needs to verify the credit card, only the customer can contact the bank to request approval of the credit card's use.

If the customer already has the credit card on their PayPal account, you can invoice them or use a PayPal account payment flow to accept payment. Otherwise, either ask the customer for a different credit card or provide an additional payment flow.
