What is Cryptocurrency?

Cryptocurrency is a digital or virtual currency that's created by cryptography. It isn’t physical, and it's not issued by a central authority. It uses a decentralized network and works through a distributed ledger technology known as a blockchain.

What Can I do with Crypto?

With PayPal, you can:

  • Send and receive Crypto to and from eligible confirmed personal PayPal accounts in the U.S. and U.S. Territories (excluding Hawaii.)
  • Buy, hold, and sell Crypto.
  • Through checkout with Crypto, you can sell Crypto and use the proceeds to pay for purchases through your PayPal account.
  • Transfer cryptocurrencies between eligible PayPal, Venmo accounts, and other wallets and exchanges.

What Cryptocurrencies does PayPal support?

Customers in the U.S. and U.S. Territories (excluding Hawaii) can transact with the following Cryptocurrencies on PayPal: PayPal USD, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Bitcoin Cash.

Can I set up crypto price alerts?

Yes, you can set up price alerts by clicking on the Bell Icon within your profile to customize a price alert if the value changes by (5) %, (8) %, or (10) %. We’ll send a push notification to your mobile device if the price goes up or down over 24 hours. Be sure you’ve installed the PayPal app and have notifications turned on.

Who can participate in Cryptocurrencies?

Customers with personal PayPal accounts in the U.S. and U.S. Territories (except Hawaii). Currently not available for business accounts.

Do I need a separate account?

No, everything you need is built into your PayPal account. Once you agree to the crypto terms and conditions, we’ll make sure your account info is up to date, and then you’ll be able to buy and sell crypto.

Do I need to sign up for anything?

For personal PayPal accounts, all you need to do is confirm some account information during your first purchase. If you don’t have a personal PayPal account, you can apply for one during your first purchase.

Are there any fees?

There are no PayPal fees for holding cryptocurrency in your account, transferring cryptocurrency to other PayPal cryptocurrency accounts, or for receiving cryptocurrency from outside of PayPal. We charge a transaction fee when you buy or sell most cryptocurrencies and network fees apply when you send cryptocurrency outside of PayPal.

For PayPal USD only, there are no fees to buy or sell. Fees apply when you use the convert feature to buy other cryptocurrencies.
