Whisker Graphics: PayPal helps a tiny team give customers the gift of simplicity.

A few decades into wide-ranging corporate careers, Kenneth Falcon and his partner wanted to buy a business of their own. But it had to be one they could grow into a substantial nest egg for their retirements. Their other requirement was maybe even more daunting. “The business had to be fun,” Falcon explains. “It had to be something we could get excited about.” 
 
A long search led them to Whisker Graphics, a supplier and retailer of creative gift packaging and craft items in San Ramon, California. Falcon loved its growth potential and its one-of-a-kind products, including Divine Twine, Bitty Bags, and a wide range of whimsical stickers and tags. 
 
Wrapping up early initiatives.  
Falcon and his partner bought the company in 2014 and hit the ground running. After moving the business to their home in Palm Springs and strengthening their partnership with PayPal, they shifted their attention to some major year-one goals. They tackled new product development, a marketing push, a website redesign, and a bigger trade show presence – all without bringing on any additional full-time staff. The results have been cause for celebration: Whisker Graphics now brings in $400,000 to $500,000 per year.1 PayPal processes nearly all of the company’s sales, freeing Falcon and his partner to focus on developing a sturdy foundation for further growth.
 
No time for payment complexity.
Whisker Graphics serves a truly diverse customer base, selling to individual crafters, large retailers, and a variety of businesses in between. These customers are located all over the world and purchase using both desktop (75%) and mobile devices (25%).1Falcon wanted to ensure a smooth, secure payment experience for all of his customers – from a wedding planner on her phone in London to a big retail buyer on his desktop in New York. 
 
Collecting and tracking payments from such a varied customer base had the potential to drain time from the core work that would accelerate the company’s growth: refining existing products, dreaming up new ones, and making sure customers were satisfied. With PayPal, Whisker Graphics has a single payment solution to collect and manage nearly all of its sales. 
 
PayPal Payments Pro and Express Checkout make it easy for customers to pay on any device – by debit card, credit card, or PayPal. Regardless of payment method, Whisker Graphics can usually access funds within minutes. “PayPal makes everything related to payments simple,” Falcon says. “Collecting payments, modifying them, giving refunds – everything’s just easier to accomplish.”
 
Preserving personal service. 
Some longtime Whisker Graphics customers prefer the personal touch of ordering over the phone rather than online. Without the right tools, maintaining these valuable relationships might have meant record-keeping complications. Whisker Graphics uses PayPal Virtual Terminal to smoothly integrate phone orders with the rest of its sales. 
 
Inviting bigger buys.
For its online sales, the growing company promotes PayPal Credit2, which offers customers special financing for 6 months on purchases of $99 or more.3 Promoting PayPal Credit can encourage larger transaction sizes, as seen by some small and midsize merchants.4 Whisker Graphics gets paid in full at the time of the sale, so the terms don’t impede its cash flow. For such a small, tightly run organization, that can make a big difference. “We’ve been successful, but you never know what hurdles you’re going to face,” Falcon says. “PayPal helps us stay focused on the goals and challenges ahead, rather than worrying about payments.”

Some small and midsize merchants saw up to 68% larger transaction sizes for customers using PayPal Credit compared to credit/debit, as reported in Nielsen’s PayPal Credit Average Order Value Study for activity occurring from April 2015 to March 2016 (small merchants) and from October 2015 to March 2016 (midsize merchants). The study compared PayPal Credit transactions to credit and debit card transactions on websites that offer PayPal Credit as a payment option or within the PayPal Wallet. Nielsen measured 284,890 transactions across 27 small and midsize merchants.
