Frequently Asked Questions
How does Vodafone Pay work?
Vodafone Wallet is a digital wallet Android app for making purchases at any store, restaurant or transport service that accepts contactless payments. We call this Vodafone Pay.
You can link your PayPal account securely with the Vodafone Wallet app and use PayPal to fund your purchases.
You need an eligible Android phone and NFC-compatible SIM. If you don’t have a contactless NFC SIM you can get one for free by ordering within the Vodafone Wallet app, online, or at any Vodafone UK store. After you’ve downloaded the Vodafone Wallet app, you can log in with your PayPal account or create a new PayPal account. You will be required to set a 4-digit NFC PIN for payments over £30. Now you are all set to pay securely anywhere you see the contactless symbol.
Make a payment by touching your phone to the contactless point of sale terminal, just like you would with a contactless card. Hold it in place until you hear the successful beep. For extra security you will be prompted by the terminal to enter your 4 digit NFC PIN if the payment is above £30. You will enter your 4 digit NFC PIN on your phone. Note there are some self-service checkout tills will require you to select card as the payment option.
You can make payments with Vodafone Pay at any retailer that accepts Visa and contactless payments. Look for the contactless symbol.
When you enable PayPal as the way to pay in your Vodafone Wallet, your PayPal account is used to fund any transactions you make. Like with any PayPal transaction, you do not need to have PayPal balance to make a purchase, you just need to have a bank account or payment card to fund your PayPal account. Please note that PayPal Credit is not available to fund Vodafone Wallet transactions at this time.
You will receive a Vodafone Wallet notification to the phone for the amount of the transaction, and the place of purchase. You will see the transaction details in the Vodafone Wallet. If you have the PayPal App installed on your phone, you will also receive a notification from PayPal, plus your transaction receipt email as usual.
How do I set up PayPal?
If you don’t have a PayPal account, you can create one via the Vodafone Wallet app. Once you have linked your PayPal account with the Vodafone Wallet, you can pay safely just by tapping your phone anywhere you see the contactless symbol. You may also create a PayPal account directly via PayPal.com.

How does it work on TfL?
Yes, you can use Vodafone Pay on the Transport for London (TfL) network as well as on National Rail services in and around London that accept Contactless and Oyster. Place the phone on the contactless card reader like you would using an Oyster card, you will hear the familiar beep to confirm acceptance.
Upon your very first usage of Vodafone Pay on TfL, you will receive a £0.00 amount notification to your phone. Thereafter, charges for daily journeys are accumulated to one amount, and made to your PayPal account overnight.
As normal, you will receive a notification to your phone and the transaction will be displayed in the transaction history. These details will be also notified to you by PayPal, and displayed in your PayPal account as normal.
Upon your very first usage of Vodafone Pay on TfL, the TfL history tab will be automatically enabled. Journey days, times, stations and routes are displayed.
The Vodafone Wallet PIN is optionally used to further secure your service. If it is set to ‘On’, you will be asked for your Vodafone Wallet PIN every time you launch the app. If it is set to ‘Off’, you’ll only need to enter your Vodafone Wallet PIN sometimes (for example, if you put the NFC SIM into another phone which has the Vodafone Wallet app installed). To activate or disable the Vodafone Wallet PIN, tap the menu button on the top left of your phone screen and choose Settings, then Security, followed by Wallet PIN. You can now switch the Vodafone Wallet PIN on or off.
If you can’t remember your Vodafone Wallet PIN, just tap ‘I have forgotten my wallet PIN’ when the app asks for your PIN. Then follow the instructions on screen.
Automatic payment means that your Vodafone Wallet will work whenever you touch it to a contactless terminal. Manual mode lets you add one extra step and manually confirm each payment with a button press on the phone.
If required, you can switch the mobile payment functionality on or off whenever you want. Just tap the On/Off button next to the PayPal card and tap ‘Continue’ to confirm. Remember, while Vodafone Wallet is switched off you can’t use it for contactless payments.
If you have a problem making a payment, check your phone and the payment terminal for any messages, and if the issue persists, please contact customer service on 08000148902 – or from the application, select ‘Settings’ and then ‘Customer Care’ Customer Care support is via phone and email.

When you add your PayPal account to your Vodafone Wallet, you are creating a link to make PayPal payments at the point of sale using your phone. The Vodafone Wallet utilises the Visa network to complete the payment with the merchant. You fund your Vodafone Wallet payments using your PayPal balance, card or bank as normal.
Vodafone is required by law to collect mandatory information about customers who make payments at the point of sale. This does not impact your PayPal account in any way. It should only take a few minutes to complete this legal requirement within the wallet, or if necessary, by contacting Vodafone customer care. While you are requested to do this, you will not be able to make payments using Vodafone Pay.
Vodafone has partnered with R Raphael & Sons ('Raphaels Bank’) to enable Vodafone Pay at the point of sale. Payments funded by PayPal using Vodafone Pay clear to the merchant at the point of sale via Raphaels Bank. You will see R. Raphael & Sons referenced in your pre-approved payment agreement for Vodafone Wallet within your PayPal account.
Please contact Vodafone directly to report the phone lost or stolen. If you have access to your PayPal account, please cancel the billing agreement for Vodafone Wallet. If you do not have access to your PayPal account, please contact PayPal directly for assistance.
You can cancel your Billing Agreement from your PayPal account. Login to your PayPal account, select the Settings icon, select ‘Payments’ and finally select ‘Manage Payments’. Here you will see your pre-approved payments. Select Vodafone Wallet (R.Raphael & Sons plc). Click ‘cancel’.
