Why was an eCheque used for my payment when it's so slow?

An eCheque is an electronic money transfer that moves money directly from your bank account, through your PayPal account, into another user's PayPal account. eCheques, like paper cheques, can take up to 10 working days to clear.

Your payment may have been sent as an eCheque for one of the following reasons:

  • You didn't have an active card on your account at the time of paying
  • The card(s) registered on your PayPal account had expired
  • Our internal security system would only allow this payment to be sent as an eCheque.
If you want to have the option to send instant payments, you'll need to add another funding source to your PayPal account, like a second bank account or a debit/credit card. We always need a back-up option if we can’t get the money from your bank.

To cancel an eCheque, you need to contact the recipient who’ll be able to cancel the payment from within their PayPal account. If the eCheque gets cancelled, the money will still leave your bank account, but it will be credited to your PayPal balance within 4 - 5 working days.
