It's free to sign up for a PayPal account. PayPal does not charge any fees when you pay for goods and services within the US using your account. There are fees in other cases, such as:
- Paying for goods and services outside the US
- Receiving payments for goods and services
- Receiving money from friends and family made using a debit or credit card
- Receiving payments from other countries
- Sending money with a credit card to friends and family
You'll receive an email asking you to activate your account. We do this to make sure you are who you say you are by asking you to verify your email address. It only takes a moment to click on the button in the activation email and enter the password you just created.
When you pay for something or send money with PayPal, we cover the transaction using a payment source, such as your bank account or credit card, or after we use your PayPal balance. We never share this information with sellers or merchants. And our Purchase Protection program covers you against unauthorized payments (See Eligibility), wrong items, and orders that never arrive.

The recipient gets an email or text notification. To withdraw the money, they log in to PayPal or sign up in minutes.
