What is the primary difference between REST and Classic APIs?

REST APIs are built around the OAuth framework and are designed for environments, such as mobile platforms, where OAuth is required. REST APIs:

  • Contain a more simplistic authorization scheme.
  • Use HTTP verbs and a RESTful endpoint structure.
  • Use OAuth 2.0 as the API Authorization framework.
  • Format request and response payloads as JSON.

Classic APIs make API calls with Name Value Pairs (NVPs) or SOAP. These APIs have been around longer and have numerous calls that REST doesn't yet support.
