How do I clear an eCheck in my Sandbox account?

An eCheck is an electronic funds transfer that withdraws money directly from your bank account. It's just like writing a check, but it's done electronically. When you send money with an eCheck, the transaction will be held as pending for three to four business days, until the electronic funds transfer clears your bank.

In the Sandbox environment, you can test sending and receiving eChecks. However, you must manually "clear" or "fail" these transactions or they will remain in a Pending status. This page describes how to manually "clear" or "fail" an eCheck. This same technique applies if you're testing adding funds to your Sandbox account balance from a bank as well.

For example, suppose that you've already set up two Sandbox accounts, buyer@sandbox.com and seller@sandbox.com, and you sent an eCheck payment to seller@sandbox.com. When you log in to seller@sandbox.com, you should see a line item indicating an uncleared payment. This is the eCheck payment received. To clear the payment (and change the status from Uncleared to Completed), you must log into the buyer's account and manually clear the eCheck.

Clearing an eCheck in the Sandbox

Here's how:
  1. Log in to the Sandbox account of the "buyer" (the account from which you sent the eCheck).
  2. Locate the eCheck payment you sent in your Recent Activity. You should see two line items corresponding to the eCheck payment. Under the Type column, you'll see Payment and Transfer. The Payment is the actual eCheck payment and the Transfer corresponds to the transfer from the bank.
  3. Click the Details link for the Transfer line item.
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the transaction Details page where you'll see two links, Clear Transaction and Fail Transaction. Click Clear Transaction.
  5. The payment status should now be updated to Cleared.

Adding funds from a bank and manually clearing the transaction

This same technique applies if you're testing adding funds to your Sandbox account balance from a bank. When you add funds from a (fictitious) bank to increase your Sandbox account balance, you won't see the balance increased till you manually clear the bank transfer. Here's how to add funds and clear the transaction in a Sandbox account:
  1. Log in to the Sandbox account to which you wish to add funds.
  2. Click the Add Funds subtab across the top of the page.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions to add funds from the bank account. When you've completed this process, you should see a line item in your recent activity corresponding to the transfer from the bank. Click the Details link for the Transfer line item.
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the transaction Details page where you'll see two links, Clear Transaction and Fail Transaction. Click Clear Transaction.
  5. That's it! You've manually cleared the funds transfer.
