Why is the PayPal payment I received temporarily held?

*Read here if a payment you received is under review.

If a payment you received is on hold, it’s usually to make sure there’s no transaction issue and that the buyer is satisfied. Here are some common reasons why a payment may be held:
  • The seller is new to selling on PayPal, or is still building up their history of successful transactions.
  • The transaction involves items in higher-risk categories like electronics or tickets, where we see higher levels of chargebacks and disputes.
  • The seller may have performance issues, or a higher rate of buyer dissatisfaction or disputes.
  • The payment is subject to an eBay payment hold.

The payment could be pended for up to 21 days. As long as there’s no transaction issue, the funds can usually be available sooner if you fulfill the order faster and update the order status in the transaction details. If a dispute or claim has been filed on the payment, the funds will be held until the case is resolved.

You may find the date in your transaction details when the funds will be available to your PayPal balance. The payment is usually released by the end of that day, or sometimes on the next day due to system processing. Once the payment is available in your PayPal balance, it’ll be auto-withdrawn to your bank account and deposited in 5-7 business days.
