How Standard Checkout works
The Standard Checkout flow consists of 6 steps:
After selecting products to purchase, your customer chooses to pay with PayPal. Customers can also choose to use your existing checkout for credit card payments.
Your customer is transferred to PayPal’s secure site (HTML redirect).
Your customer logs in to their account and reviews their postage and billing information. Your customer clicks Pay to make their payment, which is processed instantly.
Your customer reviews their payment confirmation at PayPal.
Your customer is automatically redirected to your site (HTML redirect).
Your customer arrives at the order confirmation screen on your website. You are notified of a successful payment via email, Instant Payment Notification, or Payment Data Transfer.
Note: Merchants with more complex checkout processes may need to integrate PayPal differently. For more information, please refer to Technical Overview of PayPal as an Additional Payment Option (PDF).
How does Standard Checkout compare to PayPal Express Checkout?
If you already accept credit cards on your website, there are two ways you can implement PayPal as an additional payment option: Standard Checkout and Express Checkout.
With Standard Checkout, your customers are transferred to PayPal to make their payment and complete their order. With PayPal Express Checkout, your customers are transferred to PayPal to approve the use of PayPal, and then returned to your website to complete their order.
The following table offers a comparison between Standard Checkout and PayPal Express Checkout.
