Additional Payment Option: PayPal Express Checkout

Seamless Integration

PayPal Express Checkout is highly recommended for merchants familiar with API programming. It enables seamless integration, which benefits both your customer and your business. PayPal Express Checkout makes customer checkout:
  • Quick. Customers don’t need to enter their postage and billing information when making a purchase - PayPal already has the information stored.

  • Seamless. Customers are taken to PayPal to approve the use of PayPal to pay, then returned to your site to complete their purchases. PayPal Express Checkout enables tight integration with your website and order management process.

How to get started

  1. Sign up for a PayPal Business Account.

  2. Verify your information.

  3. Set up PayPal as an Additional Payment Option.

How PayPal Express Checkout works

The PayPal Express Checkout flow consists of 6 steps:

After selecting products to purchase, your customer chooses to pay with PayPal. Customers also have the option of using your existing checkout for credit card payments.

Your customer is transferred to PayPal (HTML redirect, Name-Value Pair API).

Your customer logs in to their account and confirms their postal address and billing information that PayPal has stored. Your customer clicks Continue to use PayPal to pay for their purchase.

Your customer is transferred back to your website to review their order and complete the checkout process (HTML redirect, Name-Value Pair API).

Your customer submits their order on your website. Your website makes an API call to PayPal to process the transaction; this is invisible to your customer. Once the payment is processed, PayPal sends your website a confirmation (Name-Value Pair API).

Your customer is taken to your order confirmation screen.

How does PayPal Express Checkout compare to Standard Checkout?

If you already accept credit cards on your website, there are two ways you can implement PayPal as an additional payment option: Express Checkout and Standard Checkout.

With PayPal Express Checkout, your customers are transferred to PayPal to approve the use of PayPal and then returned to your website to complete their order. With Standard Checkout, your customers are transferred to PayPal to make their payment and complete their order.

The following table offers a comparison between Standard Checkout and PayPal Express Checkout.
