How do I open or close a PayPal account?

There are 3 types of PayPal accounts: Personal, Premier, and Business.

Here's how you open a Personal or Premier account:

  1. Click Sign Up at the top of the page.
  2. Select your country or region.
  3. Choose which account type you want and click Get Started.
  4. Enter your information, including your full email address, and choose a password (it must contain at least 8 characters and is case sensitive). You will need these to log in to your PayPal account.
  5. Click Agree and Create Account.

Here's how you open a PayPal Business account:

  1. Click Sign Up at the top of the page.
  2. Select your country or region.
  3. Under the Business section, click Get Started.
  4. Select a payment solution and click Continue.
  5. Follow the instructions based on the payment solution you’ve selected.
  6. Once you have set up your account, click My Business Setup in the banner over your PayPal balance.
  7. Choose the section where you want to begin and click Start Now.

If you decide to close your PayPal account, you should withdraw your PayPal balance and then follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your account.
  2. Click Profile at the top of the page.
  3. Click My settings.
  4. Click Close account beside Account type and follow the instructions.

We might ask you to confirm that you own the account before it is closed.

To sign up for a PayPal account if you've made a purchase using PayPal as an unregistered user:

Locate the email receipt for your past purchase. In that email, click the Save My Information link to register with PayPal.

If you no longer have your email, please call us by following the steps below and we will resend the email receipt.

  1. Go to the PayPal website.
  2. Click the Help link in the top right corner.
  3. Click the Contact Us link.
  • If you don't see a "Save My Information" link in the email, PayPal recognizes you as an existing customer.
  • You can have one Personal account and one Premier or Business account. You can add more email addresses, debit or credit cards, and bank accounts to your account, but each account must have its own email address and financial information. You can also upgrade your Personal account to a Premier or Business account.
