What is an unauthorized payment?

Any payment made from a debit or credit card, bank account or PayPal account without the account owner’s permission is an unauthorized payment.

When PayPal believes that a payment is unauthorized, we place a hold on it. Money can't be withdrawn until we determine if the payment is authorized.

If the payment is unauthorized, the money is returned to the sender's account. Sellers who meet the eligibility guidelines unde PayPal Seller Protection are protected.

If there is unauthorized or suspicious activity on your account, you should report it through the Resolution Center.

Here’s how:
  1. Log in to your PayPal account.
  2. Click Resolve a problem in our Resolution Center at the bottom of the page.
  3. Click Dispute a Transaction.
  4. Select Unauthorized transaction and click Continue.
  5. Follow the steps to report the transaction.

If you can't log in to your account:
  1. Click Security at the bottom of the page.
  2. Scroll down and click Suspicious or unauthorized transaction? on the right side of the page.
  3. Follow the steps on the screen to report an unauthorized transaction.
