What is the inactivity fee?

PayPal has introduced an inactivity fee in certain countries to maintain inactive accounts. The inactivity fee isn’t charged in the US.

Notifications to inactive accounts began on September 15, 2023. To avoid the fee, do any of the following before October 19, 2023:

  • Log in to your account
  • Pay with PayPal
  • Send money to friends or family using your PayPal account
  • Withdraw money from your PayPal account
  • Donate to a charity using PayPal

This fee will only impact accounts that have been inactive for at least 12 consecutive months. The fee will be the lesser of the account balance or $20 CAD. Accounts with a zero balance won’t be impacted and this won’t result in any negative balance.

If an account no longer has a positive balance after being charged this fee, and has had no login activity for two or more years, it may be closed in accordance with the PayPal User Agreement

Note: Managed accounts and accounts held by customers in the province of Alberta, which have a balance of more than $250 CAD and which have been inactive for less than five years are excluded. Accounts which have a balance equal or less than the existing FX settlement amount are also excluded.
