About Payflow Pro

What is Payflow Pro?

Payflow Pro is a secure, reliable payment gateway. The payment gateway sends billing information to banks to authorize, process, and manage payments that come from online, mail, and telephone orders. Financial institutions require billing information for these orders to be transmitted through a certified, secure connection such as the Payflow Pro payment gateway from PayPal.

How is Payflow Pro different from Payflow Link?

Both services are payment gateways. Payflow Pro can be integrated into your website or e-commerce application, so you have complete control over the look, feel, and functionality. With Payflow Pro, your customers don’t leave your site to enter their payment information during the checkout process. Payflow Pro is a scalable, fully-integrated payment processing solution, so it is ideal for businesses with moderate to large number of transactions.

Our other payment gateway, Payflow Link, is more suitable for low to moderate number of transactions. With Payflow Link, your customers go to a PayPal-hosted payment page with limited customization.

What types of payments can I process?

Payflow Pro allows you to process credit and debit cards, PayPal payments, delayed shipment billing, and electronic checks (TeleCheck). You can process payments automatically through your website or manually process orders received through telephone, fax, or mail using Virtual Terminal, included with Payflow Pro. All processing uses the internet to transmit billing information to financial institutions rather than paper or dial-up connections.

Can I use Payflow Pro to accept credit cards when the buyer is present?

Both PayFlow Pro and Payflow Link include Both PayFlow Pro and Payflow Link include Virtual Terminal, which lets you manually enter credit card information for a mail, fax, telephone, or the occasional in-store order. However, if you expect to process a lot of in-person orders, you should invest in a card-swipe machine.

How many transactions per month can I process?

PayPal does not limit the number of transactions you can process each month. The Payflow Pro monthly price includes 1,000 transactions per month. Each additional transaction is $0.10 CAD.

How will I know if a transaction has taken place?

For Payflow Pro, you will receive a real-time response and you can choose how to relay the information to your web pages.

What do I need to implement Payflow Pro?

You will need a website or e-commerce application, an internet connection, and an internet merchant account. If you do not have an internet merchant account, you should consider one of our all-in-one solutions.

If you want to allow your customers to purchase multiple items in one transaction, you will also need a shopping cart. Payflow Pro is compatible with over 200 of the most popular shopping carts. Many web hosting services and shopping carts already include Payflow Pro built-in. See our list of compatible Shopping Carts.

If you plan to implement Payflow Pro yourself, you or your web developer will need to be familiar with web development tools or procedures. For hosting services and shopping carts not integrated with Payflow Pro, your web or software developer will need to download the software development kit (SDK) and developer’s guide through PayPal Manager.

Why do I need an internet merchant account to use Payflow Pro?

To accept credit cards for payment on the internet, you must have an internet merchant account with an acquiring institution. The acquirer authorizes the purchases made with the card and ensures the funds are deposited into the merchant's bank account. Payflow Pro will work with your existing internet merchant account.

Does Payflow Pro come with an internet merchant account?

No. If Payflow Pro is purchased separately, you must also apply for or already have an internet merchant account.

If you sign up for Website Payments Pro, you will get Payflow Pro along with a built-in internet merchant account and our payment option designed to increase sales, Express Checkout.

How long will it take to implement Payflow Pro?

Web developers on average can implement Payflow Pro in three to four hours. After the implementation process, you should run test transactions to confirm that everything is working properly. For more information about implementation, go to Payment Services Support.

Do I need a shopping cart if I use Payflow Pro?

Yes. Payflow Pro is not a shopping cart application. If you want to offer your customers the ability to purchase multiple items in one transaction, you will need a shopping cart. Payflow Pro is built-in to most major shopping cart applications. See our list of integrated shopping carts.

Can I display the PayPal payment option on my Payflow Pro checkout?

Express Checkout is available as an optional feature (U.S. only) to Payflow Pro hosted checkouts. This option for Payflow Pro gives customers an easy way to pay with one of the most popular payment methods online and is designed to help your business increase sales.

What happens to my customers, when they choose to pay with the PayPal Express Checkout option in Payflow Pro?

Your customers are returned to your site at the end of a PayPal transaction.

Can I use Payflow Pro with enterprise e-commerce applications?

Yes Payflow Pro can be integrated with the following enterprise applications: Macromedia/Adobe, Cold Fusion, IBM Payment Manager, Microsoft Commerce Server, Intershop, Oracle iPayment, BEA Weblogic, and SAP. For more information, see Enterprise E-Commerce Integration.

What technical environment is required to use Payflow Pro?

The Payflow Pro client is available as a C library (.dll/.so), binary executable, Java library, COM object, Java Native Interface, and Perl Module Interface. The Payflow Pro software development kit (SDK) is compatible with all major web server platforms, including:

Can I use one Payflow Pro account for multiple websites?

Yes. You can use a single Payflow Pro account to process credit card payments for multiple websites, as long as all the payments are being deposited into the same internet merchant account.

Does Payflow Pro come with technical support?

Payflow Pro comes with free email and web technical support. Also, after enrolling for Payflow Pro, you will get 30 days of free, basic, phone support through a toll-free number. Additional Technical Support packages are available for purchase.

Security and Reliability

Do I need a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificate if I use Payflow Pro?

Yes. With Payflow Pro, your customers enter their credit card information into a form that you host on your server. To protect your customer’s payment information transmitted over the internet, you will need an SSL certificate on your web server. Learn more about SSL certificates.

Is PayPal PCI, Visa CISP, and MasterCard SDP certified?

PayPal meets the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI) required by American Express, Visa U.S.A., MasterCard International, Discover, JCB, and Diners Club.

How do I know if PayPal is a reliable, high-performance network?

PayPal transacted over $27 billion USD in 2005, making PayPal one of the largest online payment companies.

How will I know if an email regarding my PayPal business account is legitimate or a spoof?

PayPal will never ask you for personal or financial information in an email.

A spoof or phishing (pronounced "fishing") email is designed to look like it comes from a well-known company. It will try to get you to click a link or button in the email, which takes you to a spoof website.

Spoof websites mimic the appearance of a popular website or company. Typically, they ask for personal information, such as a credit card number, Social Security number, or account password. You may think you are giving information to a trusted company when, instead, you are supplying it to a criminal.
