How do I close the PayPal account of a deceased relative?
We're very sorry to hear of your loss. Please note that we can only take instructions from the authorized executor or administrator of the deceased estate to close a PayPal account previously held by a deceased person. If you wish to close the account of a loved one, please contact the relevant executor or administrator.
If you are an executor or administrator of a deceased estate, please follow the guidance below, and we can assist with your request.
Please email the following documents to bereavement@paypal.com.au for review.
If the executor is a statutory body:
- A cover sheet that states that the account holder is deceased and that the account's executor wants to close the account.
- The email address of the account provided in the cover letter.
- A copy of the account holder's Death Certificate; and
- A Statutory Certificate identifying the statutory body as the administrator of the Deceased Estate.
If the executor is not a statutory body:
- A cover sheet that states that the account holder is deceased and that the account's executor wants to close the account.
- The email address of the account provided in the cover letter.
- A valid government-issued photo ID of the executor.
- A copy of the account holder’s Death Certificate.
- A Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration; and
- A copy of the Executor/Administrator's government-issued photo ID (such as a driver's license, passport or state-issued ID).

Upon receipt, the documentation and account will be reviewed. Any mailed documentation will be destroyed once reviewed. We cannot return mailed documents.

We can disburse any money that remains in the account in one of the following ways:
- Transfer to the bank account linked to the PayPal account.
- A wire transfer can be issued.
