Can I cancel a PayPal payment that I've already sent?

Note: Some hyperlinks in our articles may not work within the PayPal app.

You can only cancel a payment if its status is “Pending”or "Unclaimed" and there’s a Cancel button beside it. This means the recipient hasn’t received or accepted your payment yet.

To cancel a pending payment from the PayPal app:

  1. Tap See Activity.
  2. Select the payment you want to cancel.
  3. Tap Cancel Payment.

To cancel a pending payment from your computer:

  1. On the Activity page, locate the pending payment.
  2. Click Cancel.
  3. On the next page click Cancel Payment.

If a payment is Completed this means the money has already reached the other party, so it can’t be cancelled.

You may still ask the recipient for a refund. If you’re refused a refund, but feel that you’re entitled to one, you can open a dispute to discuss this with the seller via the Resolution Centre*. If this doesn’t help you can escalate your dispute to a claim, for PayPal to resolve if necessary.

* The Resolution Centre is not available on the PayPal app but you can access it via the PayPal website on your desktop.
